Ready for First Interview..

Well further on from last week I have had some further talks with Paul.. and I can sense a plan coming together in my mind. I have already discussed the basic steps with Jeff, and he said that my approach would be sound.

Paul is turning out to be a fascinating character, and if I get this right it should be captivating.
I should be seeing Paul Tonight, so I am tempted to begin the process.. I do need to experiment with sound recording, to make sure that the sound quality is going to be good enough...

best way I think is to just jump in at the deep end and see what happens...

Written submission - What do I want to achieve?

Ok, I have to submit in writing today... so I have edited together my blog entries, and set out what I hope to achieve..

What do I want to achieve?

Well having seen some of the winners of last year’s awards, I honestly think I can win some kind of prize… I think I can put together some kind of meaningful narrative, and that together with the technical skills I have, make a piece that is beautiful to watch as well as being a moving story… Might as well aim high…

Documentary looks best bet.

So what about the new project?

I had been hoping to make some kind of Drama, but what with other commitments to studying etc. I have been seriously considering making a documentary.

I have known Paul for about 20 years on and off, He is a really interesting and talented bloke. I mentioned the idea to him last night and he has, in principle, agreed to me making a film about him...

I have told him that I want to take a really good look at his life as a person as well as a musician...

I think I can do something just as good if not better then what won last years award.

What is so interesting about film making?

When I spoke to Jill the other day, I felt it was important to get it across why I wanted to take my film making so seriously.

I think it goes back to a childhood fascination. Being a child of the 1960's I do remember that even in them days, there were still one or two households that didn't have a TV. I always remember us having one. I used to love it, the first one we had was like watching a flickering black and white goldfish bowl. It took an eternity to warm up, and it had a bright white dot in the middle when you turned it off.

As I was the youngest, Mum was often busy with my older brothers, so quit
e often I was left alone in front of the TV.. Even now, the TV is like a big security blanket, Prozac for the eyes as one friend always used to say.. Even now I am that addicted that at the moment I have chosen NOT to have a TV so that I will get some work done...

More to the point...

In my life I have always been interested in performing and entertainment... I was always in school plays and choirs. I learned the Trumpet at age 6, and was in the scout band. I took up the guitar and keyboards and played in local bands. I then moved on to singing and doing cabaret in local pubs and clubs.

But it was one day in 1995 that I got fed up with all that and joined a theatre group.
I loved it. and have done it ever since.. mostly amateur, but I have had the odd paid job...

So this side of my life joined with my passion for art and photography is what is giving me a real buzz about film making.. Logically I've seen enough TV and been involved in producing so many plays that hopefully some of it has rubbed off and my films will show it.

The idea for entering the film festival actually came from Jeff Hobbs last semest
er.. He thought one of my earlier pieces was good enough to show... but I had unfortunately missed the deadline...

Well having looked at a couple of the entries and one of the winners from last year, I
think my work is capable of holding it's own..

(Pictures... top- me as Cassanunder in an adaptation of Terry Pratchet's 'Lords and Ladies' ... Bottom- Me as Ramon Mercader in a short play by David Ives called 'Variations on the Death of Trotsky')

in the beginning..

Well I am now officially promised to enter the film festival. Well, the first thing to do is come up with a plan...

Making a plan.. ok, well start at the end, and work backwards... the end will be final submission date for the festival..... when is it?

Hull film festival web site? still has 2010 dates on... UK film council?... no mention... other sites...??

NOTHING...???

OK email sent to Hull film office... and going from last year...

Usually, the submissions deadline is about a month before the festival, so I am working towards a finishing date of 1st march 2011.

..good start..

OK just to bring you up to speed, here is a link to my Youtube channel..

Hi everyone, I have had an interesting year.. One thing that has really grabbed my by the proverbial's is my new found love of film making.

I was a bit unsure when we first started doing it, but thanks to some brilliantly enthusiastic teaching by Jeff Hobbs.. I have come to realise that film making is a really good direction for me to take..

I think film making encompasses all the things that I have a love of.. Theatre... Music... Photography... and technology...

Anyway.. I have decided to give serious thought to the film making side of my degree.. maybe going on to a film BA top up (if there is one available...)

OK back to the point.. So, I have given my pledge to to Jill and Jane of the old CATS department, that I will be entering a film into the Hull Film festival for next year.. and that will be my one and only target for my PPD assignment... no pressure...lol.
